Networking
INFO
- baikal.math.wsu.edu (134.121.45.69) goes to the linksys router/firewall.
- port forwarding:
- port 22 (SSH) forwards to baikal.
- port 3389 (Remote Desktop) forwards to baikal.

- add another ip (cgad.math.wsu.edu?) to also go to router
- open VPN as well
- purpose: file sharing, remote desktops, etc... to the multiple computers on our internal network will all be handled through VPN (check this with Sharif)
- replace 10/100 hubs with 1000 Mbit switches on internal network
purpose: Need good transfer rates for video & graphics work. Also need more ports. Two parallel networks:
10.0.0.x is internet & remote desktop network, secured, accessible by VPN b. 10.0.2.x is not secured, used only for clustering & data transfer.
buy or build replacement router/firewall for <$100
- purpose: currently we're using my personal router. We may also use additional functionality such as a subversion server.
- idea: just buy a small Dell from WSU surplus? or atom motherboard?
baikal: GPU computing node.

- os is Debian linux 'squeeze'.
drive storage is set up using the Logical Volume Manager (lvm). drives can be added/imaged/resized live. config tool: system-config-lvm
preferred package manager is aptitude. Non-managed software should go in /usr/local/

- create shared user directory for data, shared by users in group "data" (create this group as well, and assign users).
refine openbox GUI to include better menus & graphical launchers.
